Peas, Beans, Sweet Peas and Fertilizer!

It’s March! Time to work the soil after the frost and plant those cold loving plants!

Peas, Beans, and sweet peas love it when the soil is cool. In fact if you wait till the soil warms up, you’ll stunt their growth.

Check your planting zone and once the fear of ice and snow is over (about mid to late March in most areas) work the soil and get your seeds or starts planted.

I love bush beans, even though I grow them over tomato cages to keep the slugs out. They’re hearty and not only taste great fresh but can up perfectly.

Here’s my favorites: Blue Lake Bush Beans (Never fail to grow abundantly) and  Three Color Blend Bush Beans (that are disease free and hardy)

These Sugar Snap Peas NEVER make it from the garden to the house! And these peas can or freeze excellently–> Green Peas

My favorite early fragrant flower is a sweet pea. There are so many varieties, you’ll need a bigger yard! But these Sweet Peas are my favorite! I plant in a pot, and near a trellis the Dwarf Bush Sweet Peas and then behind them plant the climbing Heirloom Sweet Peas!

Don’t forget to fertilize your veggie garden before it’s planting season (except for cold weather plants, wait until Mother’s Day to start planting seedlings) But in the meantime, work fertilizer into the soil allowing the weather to work it in well. I use Jobe’s Organic All Purpose Granular

And don’t forget to ammend the soil for your flowers. In large planting areas, I spread Blood Meal before I plant to get the blooming season going. FYI, your dogs will love the smell (it won’t hurt them) but keep an eye out for them digging in your flower beds! <–this is why I put it out in March and April before the dogs are spending more time outside.
